Bradley will make a nostalgic return home for one day this season when it hosts a Division I regular-season game on campus for the first time in nearly 30 years.
The Braves are scheduled to play Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 16 at new Renaissance Coliseum, the $50 million, 4,200-seat facility that is located at the former site of Robertson Memorial Field House. The men's team compiled a 400-100 record at the Field House before moving to Carver Arena after the 1982 NIT championship season.
Returning for a regular-season game for the first time since playing Division III Illinois Wesleyan at the Field House in 1993 should bring back many memories, especially for assistant coach Willie Scott, who played for the Braves during the 1982 season.
"It's extremely exciting to have an opportunity to play back on campus," Scott said in a statement. "I have to describe it in one word: electrifying. When we played at the Field House, we always felt like we had an advantage because everyone was on top of us. The whole game was just exciting, and I'm sure it is going to be like that.
"I think it will be great for the students, which also will be great for our players. I suspect there will be a lot of students at that game, and when there are a lot of students, the energy is so much greater and really adds to that home court advantage."
Bradley has played in scrimmages and exhibition games Renaissance Coliseum before, but bringing back regular-season basketball there is part of a concerted effort to get the campus involved. The timing seems right given that the program is getting a fresh start with coach Geno Ford. Also, the game should interest students since the school is selling $1 tickets for the 1,200 of the seats reserved for them.
"We are very interested in improving our student attendance and experience," athletic director Michael Cross said in a statement, "and believe this game will create more opportunity for our students to engage our program."
